‘Us and Them’ opens minds and mouths

KERRI-ANN BEVIS

The 18th of April marked the first drama showcase to be held at Westville Girl’s High School and was also the first official performance of the tour production ‘Us and Them’ written by David Campton. Five performances were presented and then the showcase was finished off by the presentation of ‘Us and Them’ that would be going on tour during the April holidays. The first five performances were well presented and well received by the audience. The performances boasted the talent of the Westville Girl’s High drama students as they performed a variety of presentations including choral odes and scene work.

The night ended with the performance of the tour production and left many of the audience members with something to mull over on the trip back home. The play contains a complex and layered story but this did not hinder the drama students as they did an amazing job of interpreting it and performing it.

A special mention must also be made to Ms. Tate who helped and guided the girls in their performance. The play made a number of poignant statements concerning prejudice and ill-informed decisions and how these factors can cause havoc in relationships and in society itself. The night highlighted the power of theatre and its ability to convey powerful messages from the playwright, through the actors and finally to the audience.
